Pumpkin Pie Shakeology

It is time to bust out the PUMPKIN RECIPES! I was starting to think how I haven’t had pumpkin Shakeology yet this year but as I was making it, I started wondering what container pumpkin actually counts as? So as I was searching for the answer, I found a video that Autumn Calabrese made that explained the containers for pumpkin and I wanted to share that with you. You can watch that video here.

When you eat pumpkin in cubes, that counts as a green container. It would be a vegetable. But if you were to buy the pureed pumpkin, it actually counts as a purple. I get the kind that is all-natural with no preservatives – literally the only ingredient in the can is pumpkin!!

Why does it count this way? Autumn said that when you have a pumpkin and its cubed up, it fits less in the container because there are big chunks and there is space between them. When it’s pureed and it’s more of a liquid consistency, you can fit more into the container and it’s more nutrient-dense, so you use a smaller container. This also explains why peanuts and peanut butter aren’t measured in the same containers – peanuts are an orange and peanut butter is a spoon.

If you followed me way back when, you know I’ve always spoken to the high heavens about how much I love Shakeology and what it does for me. I love pumpkin everything and I remember when I started my transformation that I was OBSESSED with pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks. I literally got them three times a week! I never looked at the sugar content or the calories because I just didn’t care. As I got older and had children and my body chemistry changed, I had to start thinking about what I was eating and drinking because it would stick to me and the weight wouldn’t come off as fast.

So I started to look up the nutrition facts of what was in a pumpkin spice latte, and it will literally BLOW YOUR MIND when you see how much crap is in ONE drink from Starbucks. And not even the venti, it’s in the tall or the grande!! As much as I loved them, I had to get rid of my sugar cravings and I wanted to change more than I wanted to stay the same. I decided, as sad as it was, that I was going to throw in the towel on pumpkin spice lattes.

I went looking for alternatives and I found this recipe that I’ve been making for six years! I usually make it with chocolate Shakeology, but the Vegan Vanilla is my new love lately so I decided to try it out with this recipe. Is it the same as drinking a pumpkin spice latte? Definitely not. But this recipe has sweetness, it’s good for you, and as you’re drinking it you know you are not ruining your progress. To me, that makes it worth it!!!

I know some of you just won’t be able to give up your pumpkin spice lattes, and that’s okay!! We all have different priorities. For me, the more I feed my sugar demons, the harder it is for me to conquer them. So I’ve found that this pumpkin Shakeology gives me a good meal, it staves off my cravings for a few hours, it builds up my immune system, and I get that sweet pumpkin flavor.

So to all you sugar addicts out there – we can get through this together!!!

Travel Immune Booster Smoothie

I have to give credit to my BFF Katy Ursta (One Fit Fighter) for sharing this recipe with me! She found it in a smoothie book to drink a few days before you travel to help prevent illness.

Remember when you’re flying that it’s SO important to stay hydrated! The lack of humidity in planes will dry out your mucous membranes which will make it easier for you to catch a cold.

Blueberry Pineapple Protein Shake

Another great post-workout refuel from Fitness Magazine!

Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory compound, which may reduce post-workout pain. The protein and carbs in milk help repair and replenish cells’ energy stores after a workout. Eat dairy within 45 minutes of exercising, when the recovery process is at its peak.

Enjoy!

Mango Crush Smoothie

OMG!!!  I just absolutely devoured my afternoon snack!  I was sitting here reading the Oxygen Magazine looking for some new clean recipes for my newest meal plan and I came across this divine sounding shake!  I had all the ingredients so I whipped it up!

Soooo after I sat down and started drinking it I took a look at the nutrition information and then just about fell off my chair!  I couldn’t believe how many calories, and then I read the carbs holy cow 50!  Then, the sugar 46!!!!!!  Seriously and this was in the Oxygen magazine!  So I read on and here is what it said!  To keep your stomach svelte with this fat torching power of protein, dairy and fiber.  Ok that’s not so bad RIGHT!!!

Basically mangoes are rich in fiber.  Research shows that eating 25 g of fiber per day can help reduce dangerous, deep abdominal fat.  So this is part of my daily intake of fiber along with the flaxseed I had in my oatmeal and the bean salad for lunch!  Perfect I am on the right track!  Next, low fat dairy is loaded with calcium, a natural fat burner.  Studies suggest the more calcium you have in your fat cells, the more fat those cells will burn.  This shake provides 200 milligrams of calcium, thats 20% of your daily needs.

Lastly, when protein is a by product of dairy.  An interesting study shows that protein and dairy work best together in fighting fat, especially belly fat!  DOUBLE BONUS!  So while I was beating myself up over the calories, sugar and carbs I am doing something amazing for my body.  I am improving intenstinal health plus I am giving my body the sweet treat it craves and its nutrient dense, will keep me fuller longer, without the guilt!  That’s my kinda treat!!!

If you are really really being strict with your diet then go for 1/2 mango, plain greek yogurt to cut back!!!

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake

Oh, how I love Fall. The leaves begin to change, the air outside is crisp, there are pumpkins everywhere, and Football games on weekends. Who doesn’t love Fall? Now that we are just about to the official fall season, kids are headed back to school, Friday night football games and pumpkins everywhere my taste buds start watering!!!

I used to be a huge pumpkin spice latte fan at Starbucks but since really digging into the quality of the food I put in my body I decided to find healthy alternatives to the things I love so I don’t feel deprived!  BINGO!  This one works great for that craving!!!

Watermelon Margarita

Matt and I are total Margarita fans!   He came up with this new watermelon margarita recipe!  A refreshing, summer drink!

Pomegranate Fizz

I am a big punch person so I always like to have a punch bowl out with a fun drink.  Here’s what will be on my table this year.

Peppermint Bark Martini

Ho Ho Ho MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!  I am so excited for Christmas this year!  My kids totally get it and they are loving the Elf on the Shelf, the tree, the presents and the Christmas music!  We are about to make some cookies for Santa this weekend and get our reindeer food ready for Christmas Eve.  But with all this fun stuff for the kids us adults need a little something to kick back and relax too! That’s where these Peppermint Bark Martinis come in!

One afternoon I was scrolling through facebook and this recipe for Peppermint Bark White Russian Came up.  I didn’t save the recipe and I searched everywhere and couldn’t find it!  What I did find was a ton of unhealthy recipes with heavy cream!  So I put my husband to the test and we created this recipe.

What we came up with is pure heaven and  I am totally in love with it!  So here it is for all of you to enjoy too!

Clean Mojito

I told my husband that I am naming today “Mitro Mojito” night!  I wanted a clean mojito recipe that is  at least a little cleaner than what you would get when you go out!  So since Matt is the master drink maker he definitely was up for the challenge.  If you remember back to Christmas time he came up with that killer peppermint bark martini recipe!!

So here is what we made, and I am sipping it right now and it’s quite tasty! The coconut milk was inspired by a restaurant we went to in West Palm Florida.

Skinny Margarita

I like to call Matt my master drink maker.  He would make an awesome bartender and loves to come up with new recipes.  He is great at taking our favorite drinks and decreasing the calories and coming up with a skinnier alternative.

We have done the Peppermint Bark Martini, the Skinny Coconut Mojito, vodka soda water and now the Skinny Margarita. The secret to our skinny margarita is actually the orange juice.  I watched Matt squeeze an entire bag of oranges and he did say his hand was going to fall off. We also had orange juice that was just natural oranges and no added sugar.  So you can use that instead of fresh squeezed oranges.

So to make your drink more tart add more lime juice.  If you want it sweeter add more orange juice and simple syrup.  You can play with the recipe to get it to your liking.  The tip to keeping your calories in check is to drink 1 full glass of water in between your drinks and limit yourself to 2.  Even though it’s LOWER calorie its still high in sugar and if you are really focusing on results then you are going to have to be very careful.
